The transportation in any city has a great impact on the quality of life for residents, especially those who cannot afford a vehicle or who don’t drive. Dubuque is no exception to this.
Dubuque has an interesting dilemma, though. We are big enough to have some public transportation, and not big enough to have a robust system. Such a system requires a large number of riders to make it sustainable.
Unfortunately, the lack of a robust transportation system greatly impacts the ability of people to get and keep a job, and creates barriers that impede easy access to healthy food options, educational opportunities and medical care.
Because of the enormity of this topic, few people feel comfortable tackling it. Thus the sector is very small and has met only one time. During that meeting, the group focused on strategies that support more walking and cycling.
In the meantime, we hope the sector group will grow and develop strategies to create more equitable transportation in Dubuque.
